What is this bar on my screen and how do I get rid of it?

There's this bar (toolbar maybe) on the top of my laptop screen and it always drops down and really lags things when I press the Function (FN) key or when my mouse goes to the top and stays there for a few seconds. It represents the F1-F9 keys along with some other additional things...I don't know when and how it got there in the first place but it wasn't there until about a month ago. I just want it to go away so it doesn't lag everytime I change the brightness of my screen (using the FN key with F6/F7). I would really appreciate serious help :) Thanks in advance!

try using system restore to go back a month,5 weeks and see if that improves things.

there SHOULD be several buttons [ usually on the right bottom ] of your monitor. control your bright level with that

click on view, click on toolbars, go right un check the mark that points to it. What is this bar on my screen and how do I get rid of it?
If you're sure you didn't deliberately install this, it probably came with another program. For example in some installations there is an option to install the yahoo firefox toolbar. And if you just whizz through the installation you forget to uncheck the checkbox. Try looking through add/remove programs.
